The House of Representatives yesterday urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to create barriers that will check the use of phones and other devices for pornographic, homosexual and immoral materials.
This is as the House urged telecommunication service providers to develop or acquire software that will block content that violate moral and religious values.
These resolutions by the House followed a motion entitled: “Call for censoring of the social media,” sponsored by Hon. Johnbull Shekarau.
Moving the motion on the floor, the lawmaker said all social media platforms have a self imposed minimum age of not less than 13 years for the setting up of profiles but that certain individuals and organisations have taken advantage of lapses on social media to post and download pornographic content.
Shekarau said that the hosting of inappropriate materials portend grave danger to the long term survival of the nation’s moral values adding that it is a systematic mode of brain washing that is going on in the social media.
Also contributing to the motion, Hon. Obinna Chidoka said the motion is porous adding that there is a need to look at the issue closely viz-a-viz the cybercrime law.
