Personality Of The Week: Kofi Awoonor

(13 March 1935 – 21 September 2013) was a Ghanaian poet and author whose work combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during decolonization. He started writing under the name George Awoonor-Williams, and was also published as Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor. He taught African literature at the University of Ghana. Professor Awoonor was among those who were killed in the September 2013 attack at Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was a participant at the Storymoja Hay Festival.

George Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor-Williams was born in Wheta, in the Volta region of what was then the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana. He was the eldest of 10 children in the family. He was a paternal descendant of the Awoonor-Williams family of Sierra Leone Creole descent. He was educated at Achimota School and then proceeded to the University of Ghana, graduating in 1960. While at university he wrote his first poetry book, Rediscovery, published in 1964. Like the rest of his work, Rediscovery is rooted in African oral poetry. His early works were inspired by the singing and verse of his native Ewe people, and he later published translations of the work of three Ewe dirge singers (Guardians of the Sacred Word: Ewe Poetry, 1973). Awoonor managed the Ghana Film Corporation and helped to found the Ghana Playhouse, going on to have a significant role in developing theater and drama in the country. He was also an editor of the literary journal Okyeame and an associate editor of Transition Magazine.

He studied literature at University College London (M.A., 1970), and while in England wrote several radio plays for the BBC. He spent the early 1970s in the United States, studying and teaching at Stony Brook University (then called SUNY at Stony Brook). While in the USA he wrote This Earth, My Brother and Night of My Blood, both books published in 1971.411-FJ+ucJL._SL500_SX315_BO1,204,203,200_

Awoonor returned to Ghana in 1975 as head of the English department at the University of Cape Coast. Within months he was arrested for helping a soldier accused of trying to overthrow the military government and was imprisoned without trial; Awoonor was later released when his sentence was remitted in October 1976. The House by the Sea is about his time in jail. After imprisonment he became politically active. He continued to write mostly non-fiction.

Awoonor was Ghana’s ambassador to Brazil from 1984 to 1988, before serving as his country’s ambassador to Cuba. From 1990 to 1994 Awoonor was Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he headed the committee against apartheid. He was also a former Chairman of the Council of State, the main advisory body to the president of Ghana, serving in that position from 2009 to January 2013.

On 21 September 2013, Awoonor was among those killed in an attack at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi. He was in Kenya as a participant in the Storymoja Hay Festival, a four-day celebration of writing, thinking and storytelling, at which he was due to perform on the evening of his death. His nephew Nii Parkes, who was attending the same literary festival, has written about meeting him for the first time that day. The Ghanaian government confirmed Awoonor’s death the next day. His son Afetsi Awoonor who accompanied him was also shot, but was later discharged from hospital.

Awoonor’s remains were flown from Nairobi to Accra, Ghana, on 25 September 2013.

His body was cremated and buried at a particular spot in his hometown at Keta in the Volta Region. Also there was no crying or mourning at his funeral all according to his will before death.

It is said that Awoonor wrote a great number of his poems as if he was envisioning his own demise. But he is a peculiar and unique writer, one who strives, almost too hard, to bring his ancestry and culture into his poems, sometimes even borrowing words from the local Ewe dialect. Being such a strong and avid practitioner of the traditional religion meant that he was of a relict species. Especially for one so highly educated, it was an even rarer phenomenon. That awareness, not only that he was a relict specimen as an individual, but that the entire culture was suffering entropy, may have come through his poems in a manner that would suggest at first that he was writing about his mortal end. Besides the personal and cultural lament, Awoonor also shrewdly decried what he would have considered the decadent spectre of Western influences( religions, social organization and economic philosophy) on the history and fortunes of African people in general. He would lambaste the thoughtless exuberance with which Africans themselves embraced such things, and gradually engineered what he would have considered a self-degradation that went far beyond a loss of cultural identity. He would often construct his writings to look at these things through the lens of his own Ewe culture.

Capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, (pronounced Wagadugu) is the largest city in the country and as such, the administrative and economic hub of the country. The city, shortened to Ouaga, has its inhabitants go by the name of ouagalais. The spelling of the name Ouagadougou is derived from the French spelling common in former French African colonies.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The major industries in this city are textiles and food processing. One of the largest markets in West Africa, the Ouagadougou grand market, was located in the city before it burnt down in 2003 but has been reopened. The National Museum of Burkina Faso, the Moro-Naba Palace (site of the Moro-Naba Ceremony), the National Museum of Music, and several craft markets are also located within this city.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ouagadougou’s climate borders between tropical wet and dry with the rainy season extending from May to October and its height from June to September, the cold season running through January from December and the hot season running from March to May. The harmattan (a dry wind) and the monsoon are the two main factors that determine the city’s climate.

As the city is the economic hub of the country, its economy is based on industry and commerce which prompts the migration of people from the countryside to find employment since the city is where goods are collected and directed to rural areas. Another important part of the economy which consists of communications, banking, transport, bars, restaurants, hotels, as well as administrative jobs is the tertiary sector. Ouaga is home to Burkina’s international airport. Air Burkina is the national airline serving domestic and regional cities. You can also fly direct from Paris on Air France.

The city is very peaceful and has a lot of sights to visit which makes it indeed beautiful.

Ghanaian photographer Nana Kofi Acquah, popularly known as AFRICASHOWBOY, is a photographer with a purpose. He is a torchbearer in the re-positioning of Africa through new imagery. With his lens, he tells the story of Africa in light and color. His keen appreciation of light, texture and composition offers a delightful and surreal insight into Africa. A former Creative Director turned photographer, Acquah’s work has been exhibited throughout Europe, Africa and United States.  Whether he’s photographing a group of locals playing soccer on the beach or a still life image of stones found on a crosswalk, Acquah’s work show a great understanding of color and affection for his subject. Each image will leave you questioning the story behind the lens. Nana’s work can be deceptively beautiful, often shrouding a provocative theme in a colorful, glossy look or atmospheric black and white tones.

In his net girl series, some of his models strike regal poses wearing nothing but beautiful and colorful net attires or are accessorized with spongy nets.  If you are like me, the first color you will notice here, is the black of their skin. The dark tones of their sub-kissed skin resonates through his lens and is so strikingly beautiful that you would long for that shade yourself. The backdrop for this shoot is of course the exotic African landscape highlighted by the sun.

Standout Nigerian Albums Of 2015

$

0

The year 2015 is fast coming to an end, and lots of events no doubt made it one that will never be forgotten in a hurry. Some great albums released this year made the year fun to many Nigerians and some nationalities alike. Jaguda.com lists top Nigerian albums released in 2015.

  1. Falz – Stories That Touch

Release Date: November 16, 2015

At the beginning of 2015, if you mentioned to most critics that Falz would have the best album of the year, you’d probably get strong cold stares. But alas, here we are at the end of the year, and Falz’s Stories That Touch is our official best album of the year. Musically it’s a great album, the production is top notch, it’s entertaining, and lyrically it’s solid in every aspect. Quite honestly, this album put a lot of other hip-hop artists in Nigeria to shame. These peeps have to do some homework now.

Standout tracks: Workaholic, Chardonnay Music, Soft Work

  1. The Collectiv3 – The Collectiv3

Release Date: October 2, 2015

The Collectiv3 is arguably the most beautifully composed body of work in Nigeria this year. The team consisting of Kid Konnect, Funbi, Poe, SDC, Temi Dollface, and IKON brought about what they think Nigerian music should sound like. It’s far from the traditional commercial music, but if there’s an evergreen album on this list, this is it. Musically, the album breaks Nigerian musical boundaries, and even if it’s not the big commercial success it’s supposed to be, it’s the sort of album that could win a Grammy if all things were equal.

Standout tracks: Forbidden Fruit, Sexy Bitch, Shey Bai

  1. Darey – Naked

Release Date: October 13, 2015

If you haven’t listened to Darey’s latest album, Naked, then you’re really missing out on some really good music. Over the past decade, Darey has matured astronomically in his music, and this album is the epitome of that maturity. From the traditional drum patterns in Asiko Laiye to the more high-life feel or Orekelewa, the album is an album that doesn’t conform to what the industry is most popular for.

Standout tracks: Asiko Laiye, Delilah, Lie To You

  1. Naeto C – Day 1

Release Date: August 18, 2015

At the beginning of 2014, a lot of critics had written off Naeto C as a ‘once upon a time’ rapper, but then, he dropped one of ‘dopest’ hip-hop albums of 2015 with Day 1. Is it a mixtape? Is it an album? Do we care? The bottom line is that Day 1 is a super dope hip-hop project, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a much better one in 2015. In a year when a lot of the bigger name rap acts dropped less than impressive projects, Naeto C came in like a thief in the night to deliver this beautiful project filled with dope samples, trap beats, and stinging bars.

Standout tracks: Day 1, Soft, Oluwaloseyi

  1. Seyi Shay – Seyi or Shay

Release Date: November 13, 2015

Seyi Shay completely gave a middle finger to all her doubters with this stellar album, Seyi or Shay. The album is arguably the best afro pop album this year, and has everything you’d want in a pop album. The lyrics, arrangement, production, diversity in genres, features are all very well put together, making it an album that will go well in Seyi Shay’s musical history.

Standout tracks: Right Now, The Mic, TINA

  1. Runtown – Ghetto University

Release Date: November 23, 2015

Runtown’s debut album, Ghetto University turned out to be a very good one. You might have expected it with the kind of 2014 he had with Galladro, Domot and Baby Answer. The album also reached out to outside shores by featuring DJ Khaled and Walshy Fire on the album, and both features turned out very good. Runtown’s Ghetto University is one of the few albums in Nigeria that you can slot in for a party and jam all day long. The beats, production, composition are all great.

Standout tracks: Bend Down Pause, Tuwo Shinkafa

  1. Chocolate City – TICBN

Release Date: April 30, 2015

You can say it was a way for Chocolate City to announce their new and improved squad under new label boss, MI Abaga. The album is a very well put together compilation made up of 15 tracks, and the 13 artists signed to the label. So that came out to be an average of one song per artist, which makes it even a better quality. Every song had a different dimension, and kept the album fresh. Although the album was not really marketed properly, and didn’t get a lot of buzz initially, it’s still a very good album, and one you can still listen to it in the next couple of years.

Standout tracks: 3 Mainland Bridge, Suite 99

  1. Reminisce – Baba Hafusa

Release Date: April 30, 2015

Reminisce dropped arguably the most anticipated hip-hop album of the year, and it comes with him being one of the hottest rappers of the year. Maybe the hype was so much that folks expected heaven and earth, and on that front it was a bit disappointing. However, when you let the dust settle, and go back and listen to it once again, it’s still a very good album. Baba Hafusa had some of everything in it. From the street hip-hop to the raunchy, love and gbedu music. Reminisce showed in this album that he can stay consistent, and be a household name in Nigeria music industry for the long haul.

Standout tracks: Local Rappers, Otiya, Grind

  1. IllBliss – #Powerful

Release Date: June 12, 2015

Riding on the wave of his 2014 hit singles, WTF and Bank Alert, IllBliss released his third studio album, and made one thing clear, he’s not hear for everybody. Illy has found a way to create his own cult following in the music industry, and for good reasons.#Powerful is everything illBliss is about these days. In a year when there were a lot of rappers spewing a bunch of incomprehensible jargon, Illy did his homework. No need for a calculator or dictionary when listening to #Powerful. It’s clear and to the point.

Standout tracks; WTF, Bank Alert, Idiche, Powerful.

  1. Burna Boy – On A Spaceship

Release Date: November 26, 2015

Although the album is barely a few weeks old, it’s still considered by many to be one of the better albums of 2015. Burna stuck to the style that gave him a lot of fame on this project, On A Spaceship. The album has some of everything, and one can really find more than enough party jams on it. Interestingly, some of the singles released this year didn’t make the album, which might not be such a bad thing.

Standout tracks: Single, and On A Very Good Day which features Wande Coal.

The portrait series was created as a result of wanting to challenge previously edifice ideas of what it means to be black or African in modern society. Both projects started out as an idea about the untold stories of urban black sports culture and black identity. The project highlights South African athletes, people who went through difficult circumstances, the remnants of colonialism and apartheid when sports was seen as a novelty for black people, a “white mans” activity. During those dark times there was little, to no voice by black people for black people. These athletes used sports to give black culture an identity, which we still use as a reference in South African history. The aim with the project is to challenge previously conceived ideas of South African black culture that have social and cultural impacts using clothes that were seen only being worn by only white people.

Monuments: Comoé National Park

The Comoé National Park is a Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Zanzan District, North-eastern Côte d’Ivoire. It is the largest protected area in West Africa, with an area of 11,500 km2, and ranges from the humid Guinea savanna to the dry Sudanian zone. This steep climatic north-south gradient allows the park to harbour a multitude of habitats with a remarkable diversity of life. Some animal and plant species even find their last sanctuary in some of the different savanna types, gallery forests, riparian grasslands, rock outcrops or forest islands.Comoe_bird

The park was initially added as a World Heritage Site due to the diversity of plant life present around the Comoé River, including pristine patches of tropical rain forest that are usually only found further south. As a well-eroded plain between two large rivers, the land in the area is home to relatively infertile soils and a moisture regime suitable to a richer biodiversity than surrounding areas. In 2003 it was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to poaching, absence of management, overgrazing of the park by cattle, problems that intensified after the outbreak of the First Ivorian Civil War.Comoe_bushbuck

The area around the Comoé National Park was historically always sparsely populated. Most likely due to the relative barenness of the soil, the presence of the river blindness disease around the Comoé river and the high density of Tsetse flies, which is a vector for sleeping sickness. In 1926 the area between the Comoé River and Bouna was declared “Refuge Nord de la Côte d’Ivoire”, which was enlarged later in 1942 and 53 to “Réserve de Faune de Bouna”, giving it some rudimentary protection. The area west of the Comoé river was added to the property on the 9th of February 1968 combined with an elevation to National Park status with an area of 11,500 square kilometres (4,400 sq mi), making it one of the 15 largest National Parks in the World and the largest in West Africa. In 1983 the park was pronounced a biosphere reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to its unique biodiversity.Comoe_roan_antelope

After the outbreak of the first Ivorian civil war the park was listed as a World Heritage Site in Danger in 2003, due to absence of management leading to poaching and overgrazing of the park by cattle. During the time between the two civil wars the park suffered greatly under intensive poaching. After the end of the Second Ivorian Civil War the park was able to recover again with the presence of the OIPR (park management) and the re-inauguration of the research station.Comoé_Researchstation_Lab_and_solar_panels

The Comoé National Park was listed as a World Heritage Site in Danger in 2003 mainly due to an increase in poaching caused by the lack of management after the outbreak of the first ivorian civil war. After the end of the Second Ivorian Civil War and the stabilisation of the region the wildlife authority agency OIPR (Office Ivorien des Parcs et Reserves) has resumed their work in the Comoé National Park. The OIPR applied to the Rapid Response Facility (RRF) for funding and was successful in being awarded a maximum grant of $30,000 to secure the park. The major challenges management faces are successful combating of poaching, reducing agricultural pressures and the renovation of the streets in the park for proper access control. Comoe_Savannah_fire

The main projects to combat these problems are the establishment of an efficient surveillance system in the park and close cooperation with local communities to reduce the pressures on the periphery of the park through participatory management and the establishment of sustainable income sources for the villagers.   Kob_antelope

Stories: How I Got Revenge on My Cheating Wife – Dimeji Ojo

This is the first episode of a short series about how a man got revenge on his wife who was cheating on him. Written by Dimeji Ojo, the story is compelling and very addictive. Enjoy the story as you read on.

footprints

The day I found out my wife was cheating, I wasn’t prepared.  I had not been suspecting for weeks, the sex wasn’t stale (at least not to me) we weren’t going through a rough patch, nothing of the sort.  That very morning she had come out of the shower and pressed her naked body against me.  I had to change my suit, shirt and tie afterwards and I was late for a meeting with my publisher but it was totally worth it.  That’s why when I walked into my home that afternoon, 3 hours earlier than normal, hoping to continue from where we left off in the morning, I didn’t expect to see my wife fucking someone else in the pool.  My pool.

My first instinct was to pick a knife off the kitchen cabinet. I almost did.  If I had, I would have killed one or both of them I wasn’t sure who I wanted to kill more.  The one I loved who had broken my trust or the object of her adulterous desires.  Then I saw his face, and the hand reaching to pull out a knife stopped in its tracks.

It wasn’t my brother or boss or best friend.  It was hers.  Her best friend, the guy who had always been there.  They were friends before I met her.  Friends while we dated.  Friends when we got married and she asked me to make him one of my groomsmen.  Friends till now.  At first I was uncomfortable with how close they were.  She told me he was like a brother to her.  Then he got a girlfriend, a hot one, who he eventually married and I never saw him in that light again.  Till now of course, in the harsh light of reality.

He had always been around it could have been going on for years.  If it had, that would make me a fool.  I was hurt, betrayed, angry, but I was not a fool.  Killing one or both of them right now in a fit of rage would be illogical, foolish.  They were still at it in the pool oblivious to me for the half hour I stood in my own kitchen watching my wife betray me.  Then I left.

At first, I was unsure what to do.  I’m not a gangster or military man, nor did I know any, so getting him killed or beaten to within an inch of his life was out of the question.  I am an author.  A rather successful one.  My last book sold around 3 million copies each in 6 continents, that is how I was able to afford the mansion in Asokoro with a pool and tennis court on the grounds that my stay at home by choice wife had converted to a love nest.

I’m not physically intimidating either.  I couldn’t beat him up myself.  The only tool I had, the only weapon I had was my mind.  I drove back to the office.  I knew the gateman would report that I had been home.  She called just as I walked into my office.  She sounded nervous.  I told her that I forgot my USB drive on the mantelpiece and I had picked it up, used the guest bathroom and returned to the office.  That I had called out her name but she didn’t respond so I figured she was sleeping and since I wasn’t staying long I decided not to disturb.  She believed me.  She had to.

I sat in my office with the lights off.  The emptiness scared me tonight.  I had rented the office space in Gwarimpa to handle the business side of the literary world and to have a zone.  A place away from home where I could come up with ideas.  I needed an idea badly that night. I got a few.  I went home that night, kissed my wife, made love to her and slept like a baby.  She was surprised by how energetic the lovemaking was, I told her I had come up with a plot for my new book.  I never showed my work till I was done so she didn’t press me. …

If you enjoyed it, you can read the parts 2, 3 and 4 here, here and here. This story is written by Dimeji Ojo who is a lawyer and author of the book ‘Monitored’. His blog address is www.monitored.wordpress.com and his handle on twitter is @iStalkwriters. You can read other stories by him on his blog and be assured of a good time.

Matela Weavers was started by an English lady. In 1998, the founder left the country. At that time there were many Basotho women working there. But about 10 weavers left and under the supervision of Mrs. Lebitsa they joined together and formed an association, they also changed the name, and called the new one Maseru Tapestries and Mats.maseruw01

Our rugs and tapestries reflect the warmth and vibrancy of life in Africa whilst achieving a high standard of professional design and styles.

They are hand-woven using mohair, which is moth-proofed and it obtains its glorious colours from colourfast dyes. As well as our standard range of designs we specialize in commission work for interior designers, business organizations, and private customers. We employ the services of a number of artists to satisfy the diversity of orders that we regularly undertake.

We charge our prices in square meters, starting at South African Rands 800-850 per square meter. We welcome visitors to our workshop in Raboshabane Road in the industrial area of Maseru.

Fashion: Vintage Collection ‘The Tempest’ by Revamp

If you are a lover of Shakespeare, the mere hearing of this collection named ‘The Tempest’, will definitely ring a really loud bell.

Well, as fate would have it, it turns out you would not be wrong as this collection was actually “inspired by the costume, soul and essence of Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, in the book, The Tempest”, in the words of Peaceful Owoghiri, creative designer of the brand.

The collection was originally showcased at the 2015 Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week held this year with the vintage appeal obvious in some of the aesthetic designs of the pieces and the models’ headpieces. Being vintage inspired, it is a combination of prints (both mismatched prints merged to perfection and matching sets of prints) and bold colours with beautiful embellishments. The story’s setting is glamorous with its focus on inspiration from art, dreams, beauty and romance. The collection incorporates all facets of goodness, elegance and perfectionism making the woman the dream of fine gentlemen.
