How To Build A Better World Cup Ball
The Physics Of Flying Objects
The amount of drag an object experiences determines how it will fly through the air; the less outside forces it interacts with, the truer it will fly. As air passes over a smooth sphere, like the Jabulani, it breaks away from the surface, cutting a wide path that’s susceptible to forces such as wind. A more-textured sphere, like the Brazuca, holds airflow close to the object, creating a narrower path that’s harder to disrupt. An Expert Kicker
One of the Brazuca testers was U.S. Men’s National Team defender Omar Gonzalez. As a defender, Gonzalez sends plenty of long passes up the field. Here, he explains how to do so successfully: Step 1: Find your target “I make eye contact with a teammate to make sure he’s on the same page as I am. When he’s getting ready to take off, I know I have to lead him with a long pass.” Step 2: Strike the ball “Try to have more technique rather than hitting the heck out of the ball. Plant your nonkicking foot next to the ball, and strike the ball below the middle so you can get some flight on it.” Step 3: Follow through “You want to have a nice, easy swing to make contact with the ball. I try to follow through in the direction I’m trying to hit the ball. When I do that, I know it will be getting to my teammate.”The post How To Build A Better World Cup Ball appeared first on Aphroden.

Lupita Nyong’o Stuns on First Vogue Cover
It was only a matter of time before the World’s Most Beautiful Woman nabbed her first Vogue cover. Lupita Nyong’o looks flawless (naturally) on the July issue of the magazine, posing in a purple printed cutout Prada dress with a huge smile across her face. And in addition to expertly modeling a number of gorgeous designer looks in the new spread (including Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Givenchy and J. Crew), the Oscar winner gives a very candid interview about her “breakout year.”
“It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life,” she tells Vogue. “People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me — before I recognized them!”
This year marked Nyong’o’s first award season, and even though she managed to rule the red carpet almost instantaneously — and seemed to never break a sweat — she says that, at times, she found her plunge into superstardom overwhelming.
“Everyone said, ‘Brace yourself, Lupita! Keep a granola bar in that clutch of yours!’” she says. “I didn’t really understand what they meant, and it was only once it was past that I realized that my body had been holding on by a thread to get through this very intense experience. Nothing can prepare you for awards season. The red carpet feels like a war zone, except you cannot fly or fight; you just have to stand there and take it.”
Thanks to all those red carpet appearances (and her stylist Micaela Erlanger) the actress found herself on top of a number of best-dressed lists, captivating the fashion world and fans in memorable looks like the bright-red Ralph Lauren Collection gown at the Golden Globes and her custom “Nairobi blue” Prada confection at the Oscars.
“We got goose bumps,” Erlanger recalls about the fitting of the caped Ralph Lauren dress. “I told her, ‘This is going to be a game-changer.’ And it was.” The stylist also tells Vogue that the first time she met Nyong’o, the actress had a Pinterest board of looks she loved. “Bold color, interesting print, interesting silhouette — simple but architectural and feminine,” she shares. “Elegance, but with a sense of humor.”
“We’d just try, try, try, try, try, try, try,” Nyong’o adds. “At first it was very daunting, but I ended up really having fun with it. It’s quite scary when you fall in love with a dress, because it’s nothing to do with your brain. It’s like a gut reaction.”
The 31-year-old star grew up in Kenya, and says she always had a penchant for fashion. She designed her own clothes, including her prom dress. “It was a velvet miniskirt with a matching little top and an iridescent silver translucent fabric that flowed to the ground,” she shares. “It was kind of ridiculous, but it was fabulous at the time.”
In addition to her stronghold on the fashion world (including a Miu Miu ad campaign), Nyong’o also landed herfirst major beauty campaign this year with Lancôme. “It’s not about conforming to an already established idea of what is beautiful, and I like that,” she says of admiring the brand and its other celebrity ambassadors.
What’s next? The star already has a huge film project lined up (Star Wars!), so there will be plenty of red carpets in her future. But we’re not sure how she can top this year.

How to Protect Your Relationship and Make It Last
The surge of adrenaline was making my heart race and my face hot. This was one intense argument, full of shouting and eviscerating insults. Everyone in the restaurant was staring. I couldn't wait for it to be over. . .so that my boyfriend and I could get the check and escape from our feuding friends and this double-date nightmare. I thought we were free once we made it to the car, but little did I know that their toxic fumes would follow us home. Soon, we were attacking each other too.
New research may explain this phenomenon: We all have mirror neurons, or brain cells that may help us process the emotions of other people and could subconsciously influence our own behavior toward others, according to a study published in Brain Imaging and Behavior. They may allow us to empathize with and better understand the people around us—which is great when your best friend lands her dream job ("Yay! Let's have a spa day!"), but not so fun when she's seething with rage at her boyfriend ("Um, gotta go!").
These cells can be responsive to stress and negative energy, so even just witnessing someone else's warring ways could put you at the pre-show of your very own romantic battle. Assuming you don't want your relationship to go down because of a fight that has nothing to do with you, here are suggestions on how to block other couples' contentious vibes.
Why Bad Juju Spreads
You're a freethinking adult, so why are you letting other people's problems seep into your life? One reason, science explains, is not that you love to soak up drama (except maybe when watching reality TV); it's because you may not even be aware it's happening. Social mirroring, or imitating others, is considered an automatic, subconscious process (triggered by those mirror neurons) that allows us to better relate to people's motives, desires, and thoughts, according to a review of research authored by Marco Iacoboni, a professor of psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We're hardwired with the impulse to imitate whatever emotion we see in those we're with," says marriage and family therapist Leslie Parrott, Ph.D., coauthor of The Good Fight. You don't even need to be that close to someone—either physically or emotionally—to take on their feelings (see "Thank You for Not Sharing," at right, for more). Just hearing of a friend-of-a-friend's relationship woes can put you in a funk.
Fail to realize where those ill feelings are coming from and you can project the anger or resentment onto your guy—which can spark a fight that you can't brush off with a "Just kidding! I'm feeling better now." And, "because your partner doesn't know the backstory, he may think these emotions are coming from something you don't like about him, and he could react in turn," says psychotherapist Avril Carruthers, author of Freedom from Toxic Relationships.
Halt That Negativity
You can't just switch off your mirror neurons—but you can stop other people's relationship tension from riling you up. In fact, just being more attentive to what's going on around you helps. "Realize that when someone has an emotion, you're probably going to pick up on it," says Parrott. And while your first instinct may be to put yourself in their shoes, it's better to think of yourself as a caring—but uninvolved—bystander. So if your sister turns girls' night into an investigation of whether or not her guy is cheating on her, consciously resist the urge to let her distrust spur your own suspicions. "It's essential to recognize whose problem it is and not take it on," says Carruthers. "Listen objectively, but don't become deeply involved. Talk to her about what she'll do, and move on." Establish some distance and you'll be less likely to catch her paranoia. And if the convo is still bugging you later on? Think of how your situation is different from hers. Remember how your man said you were the sexiest thing he'd ever seen? Right, you two are fine.
If you happen to be stuck with a pissed-off person or pair—say, you're a backseat observer to a front-seat argument—do your best to change the subject to a neutral topic (like the lovely scenery), or plug in and distract yourself with music. Don't try to take a side or defuse the tension with a joke (odds are, it won't work anyway). Once you've survived the awkwardness, alert your guy to the fact that there could be a ripple effect. Tell him, "I'm upset about what's going on between Gwen and Ryan, and I don't want it to affect us," suggests Carruthers.
However, in the case that this wasn't just one bad car ride (i.e., it's pretty much World War III every time you're with this pair), it may be best to distance yourselves from the troubled twosome until things settle down—or they break up. "There's really nothing healthy or productive that can come from this type of dynamic," says psychologist Sherrie Campbell, Ph.D., author of Loving Yourself: The Mastery of Being Your Own Person. Become less available to meet up or talk on the phone, and if your friend asks why you've gone missing, be direct. Campbell suggests saying, "I love spending time with you, but your relationship drama is starting to affect me."
Let in the Good Stuff
Though mirror neurons are considered equally sensitive in their response to negative and happy sentiments, it's a healthier idea to hang out with other couples whose, say, mutual affection and respect you admire—and to make it a regular outing. In the hours and days following these double dates, you'll most likely find that you and your guy can't seem to keep your hands off each other or are cruising through a no-fighting streak. This is when subconscious mirroring can be pretty awesome—and you'll be gladthat other people's romantic energy can follow you home.

4 Ways to Burn Belly Fat Faster on Your Next Run
You've been eating right and exercising for a while, but that stubborn belly fat just won't budge! Along with incorporating foods that fight fat into your diet, here are some ways to burn that pooch away while you are out on a run.
Switch Up Your Pace
Intervals are proven to reduce belly fat and rev up metabolism; instead of running at the same pace for the entire workout, try alternating between periods of pushing your body to the max and periods of recovery. Here's a list of interval workouts for you to try:
Go a Little Longer
Unfortunately you can't spot treat when it comes to weight loss, which is one reason why solely doing crunches won't whittle your waistline. The key is to decrease overall body fat, and the one way to do that is to burn calories. Lengthening your workout will do just that. Every five minutes of running at a 10-minute-per-mile pace burns about 45 calories. Think about that on your next run, and it'll motivate you to keep going!
High Knees
You're working hard to diminish your overall body weight, which will slim down your belly, so you can reveal toned abs underneath. Here's one way to strengthen your core. Do one-minute intervals in which you run with high knees. Concentrate on using your abs rather than your leg muscles to kick your knees up as high as you can.
Try This Killer Treadmill Move
Here's another core killer if you're using a treadmill. Set the pace to 1.0 mph. Place your feet on a Plyo Box that's set up about two feet behind the back of the treadmill. Come into plank position with your hands straddling the treadmill belt. Step your hands on the belt and start walking, keeping your torso in one straight line. Do this for one minute, pulling your belly in toward your spine. Watch the above shredmill move in action here!
