The April 2013 edition of Bubbles Magazine is covered by African pop icon and music megastar 2face Idibia. Not just any old cover, mind you; Bubbles went out on a ledge to create a portrait of Tubaba in all his regal glory on a never before seen reflective cover. The first 3,000 readers to pick up their copies will get the special limited edition cover, while other readers will have to make do with the regular cover. Bubbles Magazine is known for setting trends and trailblazing; last edition which featured eLDee The Don and Trybe Records had a special gate-flap cover.

This edition combines a couple of firsts: the colourful portraiture and the reflective cover is one that has never been seen on the continent. The new edition features Chidinma who talks about her plans for the future and Praiz who incidentally contested on Project Fame the year after Chidinma.

As always, Bubbles Magazine- respected as being the authentic voice of Nigerian entertainment journalism does not let down with this comprehensive compilation. With the current state of the nation, 2015 will be an important milestone in Nigeria’s history. As such, we are focused on organising the youth vote to be effective and transformational and also want to communicate numbers that the youth vote must count.”

Highlights of the event include the formal launch of the organisation’s countdown to the 2015 General Elections, details of its engagement with partners and stakeholders, as well as showcasing the technology tools that foster citizen education and engagement.

Monday-like-a-Friday (Week 3)

Hello guys! It’s another promising week and in the midst of all the grim news I’m going to be giving, I want y’all to think positive this new week. It might be harder than usual but I assure you that it is possible. I’d like for you to appreciate life and all that you have. It’s easy to get carried away with all the busyness and take everything for granted. As much as I can, this week and in the coming weeks, I’ll try to give as much good news as the not-so-good so I don’t put you in a horrible mood before you even get the chance to start your day. Heads up, people

228 people killed in Baga siege

The shoot-out I reported here last week in our Monday post allegedly killed 228 people. That’s 45 people more than the Red Cross claimed there were and more than six times the number reported by the military. Senator Maina Maaji Lawan at a press conference in Maiduguri said, “I personally visited three graveyards in Baga and counted 228 graves where victims had been buried.” The numbers are staggering and more than we can bear. President Jonathan has opened an investigation into the siege, including the actions of the military.

Boko Haram commander killed by the JTF

On the flip side, Boko Haram’s commander, Mohammed Chad, has allegedly been killed by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order (ORO) last weekend. The spokeman for JTF was more than delighted to report this in a statement. The late Chad was the mastermind behind many bombings in Borno in the past and I hope it gives you peace to know that something is actually being done to curb the Boko Haram menace.

The Tsarnaevs retreat

Following the news of the Boston bombings and the suspected bombers, Antor Tsarnaev and his wife have relocated back to Russia. Antor, as well as some other members of his family, claimed the naked man being led into a police car was his son Tamerlan in the blurry footage still widely available on YouTube. The police maintain that Tamerlan was killed in a shoot-out and the man seen in the video was a bystander being briefly detained. The Tsarnaevs have relocated back to their home in Russia to mourn the death of Tamerlan but they still remain in touch with Dzhokhar’s lawyer. The Tsarnaevs maintain that their sons were set up by the United States and were not responsible for the bombings in Boston.

Now for this week’s survival tips. Let’s dig in

1. Clear your workspace

You’d be amazed at the wonders this one tip does. It may not look like a lot but it works miracles for your mind and productivity levels. Start with your computer if you work with that often. Head over to your download folder and delete files you no longer need. Organise the ones you still need into appropriate folders. Then move to your desktop and ARRANGE your icons. Seeing scattered icons on a desktop makes me want to grab that computer and IRON all the creases out of it. I kid you not.

If it brings you more joy, you can clean out your documents’ folder of files you do not need. Move things to your SkyDrive if you have one so you can easily access your files from any computer. That way, you don’t need to move your computer around with you all the time. Thank me, later. Clean out our work table, your office. Get rid of stuff you aren’t using anymore. Let “declutter” become your new mantra.

 2. Make time for relationships

It doesn’t matter if it’s only 5 minutes of a seemingly meaningless conversation with a member of your family, your significant other or a dear friend. Talk to that person till you get to the laughing part. It’s the most therapeutic thing you can do every day. Work on one relationship per day so you don’t get overwhelmed. I personally think calling or seeing each other physically is way better than IMing, texting but if you cannot call (for some strange reason) or see physically, do text someone special today an everyday this week till you get to the fun part. It’ll bring a smile to your face and make you a little fuzzy inside. Bonus: you get a spring in your step too.

3. Turn off your phone

Yes, I said it. When you’re working or you’re in class, turn off your notifications or turn off your phone entirely. Mobile phones are more demanding than babies these days and we indulge them too. Do not flit from work to your phone, or from looking at your lecturer’s face to tapping away on your iPhone screen. Do one. Face your work. When you’re taking your break, you can check your Twitter, IMs and texts. Take your calls only if you have to. If it’s nothing urgent, don’t leave your work, call back when you’re through with your work/class.

I want to hear how you survive and even ENJOY your week. Want to tell me about them in the comment box below?

In Style with Coco: Wedge Trainers

Every now and again, a clearly ridiculous trend starts on the runways, manages to beat all form of reason, and is embraced by the mainstream. Recently, these trends have comprised footwear because, for very obvious reasons, most women are more willing to experiment and play around with their accessories than the actual clothes. Plus, there are like a gazillion things you can do with a handbag, whereas a pair of jeans gives you a shorter leash. The pre-eminent example of the sort of ridiculous trends of which I speak is the open-toed boot. I mean, it really is very clear that it is a hideous look, and yet, as of last winter, it became ever-present on the high street. I really don’t know what to make of it, but that’s not why we’re here today. Perhaps I’ll vent my frustration on the matter some other time.

Now, we’re here because of the new trend made famous by French designer Isabel Marant; Wedge Sneakers, or trainers if you will. This trend is currently at the point where it’s not quite mainstream yet, but is pretty close to hitting. As wedge sneakers crest this very crucial wave, I have a duty to you, my fabulous reader and fashion lovers, to get you in the know.

So, the wedge high-top sneakers….

Well, I LOVE wedges (who doesn’t?) and I’m absolutely crazy about high-tops. So a combination of this two is like spreading chocolate on water crackers for me, resulting in an experience so amazing it just increases the awesomeness of the individually beloved ingredients. DIVINE. But, of course, there are those who disagree and refuse to buy into this trend.

While I’m compelled to make you share my enthusiasm, I have a job to do as a professional, and that job is to make you make the right choices before jumping on a trend. So, when a new trend arises, there are three basic questions you need to ask yourself before diving in and investing all your money in it.

1.       How does this make me look/feel

You want to invest in trends that make you feel as good as you look. I’ve said before that your confidence is your best accessory. There is no way you can look good in something you don’t feel confident wearing.

2.       How long do I see myself wearing this?

Yes, I know it’s fun to splurge on clothes and accessories that are trending, but you have to think about longevity. How long do you see yourself in that trend? What if the shoes aren’t “in vogue” any longer? Would you still wear them then? You don’t want to spend a ton of money on something that won’t last.

3. Would I still want this if I saw someone I didn’t like wearing it?

You may not think so, but your perception of people and the outfits they wear actually have a strong influence on what you yourself buy. Think about it. If a lady you thought had a style sense deficiency walked past you in a pair of wedge sneakers would you still love them and think they were all that and a bag of chips?

If you answered most of these questions in the negative, then maybe this trend isn’t for you. But that’s nothing to feel down about. You can keep rocking your thigh-tops and wedges for as long as you like. Some might be happy they don’t have to multitask their feet.

However, if you can answer two of these questions positively then we’re ready to move on.

Wearing Wedge Sneakers

Here are some ways you can incorporate your new wedge sneakers into your wardrobe.

Slim Fit

When rocking wedge trainers, you can’t go wrong with a nice pair of slim jeans. A slim silhouette balances the chunky trainers while making your legs look longer. Take a cue from the collection I put together.

Ad some layers on top to keep your feet and legs from looking bottom heavy. Chunky knit jumpers, scarves, and jackets, matched with a pair of skinny jeans will balance the wedge trainers perfectly.

Short

The suns shining, and you’ré feeling a bit adventurous so why not choose for a pair of hotpants, a short fitting dress, or a cute romper if you’re really in the mood for a fun look. Short hems accentuate your leg length and break up an outfit perfectly.

Dress It Up

Pair your wedge high-tops with a simple LBD to go from casual to night-time glamorous instantly!

The real beauty of wedge trainers that they can be worn with practically anything. You can style them up with the a pair of fitted joggers, or simply pair them with a sexy leather skirt, or a pair of leggings and a plain grey tee. And of course, they’re perfect for the sports luxe trend as well, so you can jump in on that.

You never fought,

You never looked back.

Really, you never did.

We maybe had something,

I was stubborn and hard headed,

Didn’t believe in love.

But that didn’t stop you from loving me.

You let yourself go for me,

But when I needed you to fight for me,

You weren’t there,

You never fought.

I never understood,

I was never patient,

I didn’t believe in love,

But I  knew you loved me.

I was stubborn and hard headed,

But I  needed you to push,

I needed you to fight for me,

Convince me to believe in your kind of love.

I needed to take my time,

I needed to listen to what you had to say,

I needed to try and believe in your kind of love,

But I didn’t,

And you didn’t fight.

Now we’re stuck in this life,

When we keep looking back from time to time.

But we missed our chance,

Cause when you needed to fight,

And I needed to believe,

You didn’t,

And I didn’t.

Hello readers! It’s a wonderful Monday morning today, isn’t it? I like that it rained this morning. We got some respite from the crazy weather this weekend.  I know I lingered in bed for longer than I naturally would because the weather was so darling! Hope y’all enjoyed your weekend with your families and friends. Time to catch up on important news you may have missed from last week and the weekend.

AMAA  2013

For those still in year-two-thousand-and-late, AMAA  was on the 20th of April in Yenogoa, Bayelsa state! I’m proud that the AMAA  has risen from the bottom and are now at the top (nam’saying?). Each year,  AMAA  hands out awards to deserving theatre art practitioners. And each year they invite a notable Hollywood figure as a special guest. This year Mario Van Peebles (film maker and producer of “New Jack City”) was more than grateful to grace the event as it was his first time in Africa. As much as I would like to tell y’all that the event went completely well and everything was peachy, I hate to break it to you but it wasn’t. The accommodation provided for the invited guests was below average. The governor of Bayelsa state, Henry Seriake Dickson, was said to have promised to provide 5 star accommodations for the local and international guests in the 250-room state lodge. However, the lodge was not renovated until the morning the award ceremony was scheduled to happen so guests were lodged in hurried Plan B hotels with no water supply and pest ridden rooms. You’d think that would be the end of it but nah: the ceremony was filled with bad jokes and grammatical mistakes from AY (the comedian) and barely audible voice of Ama K. Abebrese. Both hosts were quickly swapped for DakoreEgbuson-Akande and Ghanian actor, AdjeteyAnang. Let’s not forget the cussing out between Chioma Chukwuka and a journalist on the plane. Chioma Chukwuka was not afraid to put a piece of her mind out in the open. Let’s just say it was a pretty ugly match.

T.B Joshua cast demons out of Nollywood actress

Camille Mberekpe (known as “Mama Eko”) was at the Synagogue Church of All Nations on Sunday to seek deliverance from evil spirits that have been tormenting her for a couple of years now. The veteran actress was shown live on national (and international TV) rolling on the floor and screaming after the popular prophet had commanded the demons to come out of her. Camille had confessed to attempting to “bring down” another popular Nollywood actress because the actress was a firm believer in God and prays a lot. She also said that all attempts to drag her to the dark side had failed. We are glad Camille is herself again.

18 killed over the weekend

Gunmen killed a total of 18 people over the weekend in two separate attacks over the weekend. In Bayelsa state, 8 former militants were killed in a clash between rival gangs. In Adamawa state, a group of gunmen stormed Njilang village and killed 10 people and injured 9 people before crossing the border into Cameroon. Speculations are that the gunmen were members of the Islamist terrorist Boko Haram group who are responsible for the deaths of 3,600 people since 2009. We hope that the police force and the Nigerian Secret Service investigate and arrest the culprits responsible for the killings.

You’re alive but some of y’all are barely surviving your weekdays. Weekdays can be overwhelmingly stressful, I can’t deny. But amidst the crazy deadlines, projects, classes, meetings, you have to really live and enjoy (not endure) your weekdays. It’s time to stop looking at your job or school as a necessary evil to survive resulting in a career wasted waiting for time away from work and school. Every week spent simply waiting for the weekend to arrive is a week wasted because that’s 5 days wasted looking forward to 2 days. The numbers are clearly against us. It’s your responsibility to start living for the weekday as much as you’re living for the weekend. I’m here to teach you how. *grin*

  1. Exercise

This might sound like a contradiction for some people. Last weekend, I did about 10 laps in the pool after 3 months of no exercise and my legs are still sore. So I understand that you’re thinking exercise will only leave you feeling more tired than you feel on a regular weekday. So here’s the deal: don’t go doing 10 laps in any pool if you haven’t gone swimming in a really long time. Start small. Jog for about 10 minutes in the mornings to awaken all your senses and move up slowly but surely from 10 minutes 3 days a week, depending on how long since you last exercised. Let exercise become a part of you. Don’t go overboard or you’ll end up being useless throughout the day and possibly the entire week. Regular exercise controls weight, combats health conditions and diseases, improves your mood and boosts energy. Who doesn’t want that?! So get to it this week. Start now. If you can find the time and spare cash, register at a gym. Work. That. Body.

2. Don’t sit around waiting for change to come

After all my motivational writing, some people still won’t take the bait and enjoy their jobs or school. If you’ve sat down, thought it through and found that no matter what, you cannot find contentment, happiness or fulfillment in your workplace, don’t you think it’s time for you to make a change? And if you don’t like the course  you’re studying and no Stephen Covey or Oprah Winfrey can make you hate it any less than you do, don’t you think it’s time to switch up? There’s no point reading Monday-like-Friday posts if they don’t help you enjoy your Mondays and other weekdays. Start hunting for a new job. Look for a new course. Don’t sit around and wait for a new job to drop in your lap because it’s not going to happen – the unemployment rate is sky high. And don’t go through school only to come out with a terrible GPA because you studied a course you really didn’t like. Make a change.

If you haven’t read any of our Monday-like-a-Friday posts before now, read them here, here and here to get more week day survival tips. Enjoy your week!
