Historical Genres of Poetry

Literature is the deepest form of language, and by extention, poetry is perceived as the most profound genre of literature. Poetry as an art form may predate literacy. Epic poetry, from the Indian Vedas from 1700 to 1200 BC  and Zoroaster's Gathas to the Odyssey (800–675 BC), appears to have been composed in poetic form to aid memorization and oral transmission in prehistoric and ancient societies. Meanwhile, other forms of poetry developed directly from folk songs. The earliest entries in the ancient compilation Shijing, were initially lyrics, preceding later entries intended to be read. Poetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Early poems evolved from folk songs such as the Chinese Shijing, or from a need to retell oral epics, as with the Sanskrit Vedas, Zoroastrian Gathas, and the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ancient attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively-informative, prosaic forms of writing. From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more generally regarded as a fundamental creative act employing language. 437px-Poveljakb Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretation to words, or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly figures of speech such as metaphor, simile and metonymy create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm. 766px-Redington Some poetry types are specific to particular cultures and genres and respond to characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. Readers accustomed to identifying poetry with Dante, Goethe, Mickiewicz and Rumi may think of it as written in lines based on rhyme and regular meter; there are, however, traditions, such as Biblical poetry, that use other means to create rhythm and euphony. Much modern poetry reflects a critique of poetic tradition, playing with and testing, among other things, the principle of euphony itself, sometimes altogether forgoing rhyme or set rhythm. In today's increasingly globalized world, poets often adapt forms, styles and techniques from diverse cultures and languages.   The efforts of ancient thinkers to determine what makes poetry distinctive as a form, and what distinguishes good poetry from bad, resulted in "poetics"—the study of the aesthetics of poetry. Some ancient poetic traditions; such as, contextually, Classical Chinese poetry in the case of the Shijing (Classic of Poetry), which records the development of poetic canons with ritual and aesthetic importance. More recently, thinkers have struggled to find a definition that could encompass formal differences as great as those between Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Matsuo Bashō's Oku no Hosomichi, as well as differences in context spanning Tanakh religious poetry, love poetry, and rap.   In addition to specific forms of poems, poetry is often thought of in terms of different genres and subgenres. A poetic genre is generally a tradition or classification of poetry based on the subject matter, style, or other broader literary characteristics. Some commentators view genres as natural forms of literature. Others view the study of genres as the study of how different works relate and refer to other works. Narrative poetry Narrative poetry is a genre of poetry that tells a story. Broadly it subsumes epic poetry, but the term "narrative poetry" is often reserved for smaller works, generally with more appeal to human interest. Narrative poetry may be the oldest type of poetry. Many scholars of Homer have concluded that his Iliad and Odyssey were composed from compilations of shorter narrative poems that related individual episodes. Much narrative poetry—such as Scottish and English ballads, and Baltic and Slavic heroic poems—is performance poetry with roots in a preliterate oral tradition. It has been speculated that some features that distinguish poetry from prose, such as meter, alliteration and kennings, once served as memory aids for bards who recited traditional tales.   Epic poetry Epic poetry is a genre of poetry, and a major form of narrative literature. This genre is often defined as lengthy poems concerning events of a heroic or important nature to the culture of the time. It recounts, in a continuous narrative, the life and works of a heroic or mythological person or group of persons. While the composition of epic poetry, and of long poems generally, became less common in the west after the early 20th century, some notable epics have continued to be written. Derek Walcott won a Nobel prize to a great extent on the basis of his epic, Omeros.   Dramatic poetry Dramatic poetry is drama written in verse to be spoken or sung, and appears in varying, sometimes related forms in many cultures. Greek tragedy in verse dates to the 6th century B.C., and may have been an influence on the development of Sanskrit drama, just as Indian drama in turn appears to have influenced the development of the bianwen verse dramas in China, forerunners of Chinese Opera. East Asian verse dramas also include Japanese Noh.   Satirical poetry Poetry can be a powerful vehicle for satire. The Romans had a strong tradition of satirical poetry, often written for political purposes. A notable example is the Roman poet Juvenal's satires. The same is true of the English satirical tradition. John Dryden (a Tory), the first Poet Laureate, produced in 1682 Mac Flecknoe, subtitled "A Satire on the True Blue Protestant Poet, T.S." (a reference to Thomas Shadwell). Another master of 17th-century English satirical poetry was John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester. shadwell Light poetry Light poetry, or light verse, is poetry that attempts to be humorous. Poems considered "light" are usually brief, and can be on a frivolous or serious subject, and often feature word play, including puns, adventurous rhyme and heavy alliteration. Although a few free verse poets have excelled at light verse outside the formal verse tradition, light verse in English is usually formal. Common forms include the limerick, the clerihew, and the double dactyl. While light poetry is sometimes condemned as doggerel, or thought of as poetry composed casually, humor often makes a serious point in a subtle or subversive way. Many of the most renowned "serious" poets have also excelled at light verse. Lyric poetry Lyric poetry is a genre that, unlike epic and dramatic poetry, does not attempt to tell a story but instead is of a more personal nature. Poems in this genre tend to be shorter, melodic, and contemplative. Rather than depicting characters and actions, it portrays the poet's own feelings, states of mind, and perceptions.   Elegy An elegy is a mournful, melancholy or plaintive poem, especially a lament for the dead or a funeral song. The term "elegy," which originally denoted a type of poetic meter (elegiac meter), commonly describes a poem of mourning. An elegy may also reflect something that seems to the author to be strange or mysterious. The elegy, as a reflection on a death, on a sorrow more generally, or on something mysterious, may be classified as a form of lyric poetry.   Verse fable The fable is an ancient literary genre, often (though not invariably) set in verse. It is a succinct story that features anthropomorphized animals, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature that illustrate a moral lesson (a "moral"). Verse fables have used a variety of meter and rhyme patterns.   Prose poetry Prose poetry is a hybrid genre that shows attributes of both prose and poetry. It may be indistinguishable from the micro-story (a.k.a. the "short short story", "flash fiction"). While some examples of earlier prose strike modern readers as poetic, prose poetry is commonly regarded as having originated in 19th-century France, where its practitioners included Aloysius Bertrand, Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud and Stéphane Mallarmé. Since the late 1980s especially, prose poetry has gained increasing popularity, with entire journals, such as The Prose Poem: An Inaternational Journal, Contemporary Haibun Online devoted to that genre. pp Speculative poetry Speculative poetry, also known as fantastic poetry, (of which weird or macabre poetry is a major subclassification), is a poetic genre which deals thematically with subjects which are 'beyond reality', whether via extrapolation as in science fiction or via weird and horrific themes as in horror fiction. Such poetry appears regularly in modern science fiction and horror fiction magazines. Edgar Allan Poe is sometimes seen as the 'father of speculative poetry'.     Written By:  Azeez Sanusi

Serena’s Diary: Pap Smear

dear-diary-942x380

Dear diary, PAP SMEAR. That has been on my mind now every day for about 2 weeks. I need to get one done. During the course of my Obstetrics and gynecology posting, I rotated through unit 4 of the department. The unit 4 is the oncology unit. I spent 4 weeks in unit 4 and in those 4 weeks 10 new cases of cervical cancer were admitted. 10 new cases in 4 weeks, this does not include the old cases o. Cervical cancer is killing our women. I had heard people say this but I never actually got how bad it really is until I saw it one on one. And the sad part is that it is killing them at their prime, at ages when it must be so awesome to be a woman.  Between 35-45 years is when the strength of a woman is at its peak, 55-65 years is when she should relax and enjoy all the labor she has put into her children. This is when cervical cancer cuts them off and it is painful. The disease is often silent, the symptoms like vaginal bleeds only start to manifest when it is already almost too late. This cancer is absolutely treatable. The key to treating it is early detection. And the only way to detect it early is to have regular pap smears done. Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease, yes it is. One of the main associated factors is the human papilloma virus which is gotten on sexual exposure. Notice that I did not say intercourse? There must not even be penetration for the virus to spread, mere contact can do that. Okay this virus is not exactly bad, when one is infected with it there are no symptoms and it is a virus the body can flush out on its own. The issue is now when there is persistent infection of human papilloma virus and the body is unable to flush it out due to reduced immunity which can be as a result of sickness, poor nutrition and so on. When the body is unable to flush this virus out it stays in the cervix and messes with the normal architecture of the cells. Cervical cancer takes at least 20 years to develop. Before it becomes cancer, the cervix first of all undergoes some benign changes; cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN). CIN has stages 1-3 and all 3 stages can be detected on pap smear and they are absolutely treatable. Even after frank cancer has developed, if cervical cancer is caught in the early stages (stage 1) it can still be treated. So please, pap smears. I cannot even stress how important it is. I just want to tell every woman I know about this. Pap smears, please. I want to tell people with young sisters or cousins or daughters that are not yet sexually active to get them vaccinated. Yes there are vaccines, but the vaccines are not effective after sexual exposure. I am getting mine done today.

                                                                                                                                                 Love,

Serena.

P.S : I talked to my mom about getting my younger sisters vaccinated. She said ‘God forbid, cancer is not our portion’. This God forbid attitude is why Nigeria is where it is today. Not our portion, whose portion is it?

Bovi on MTVBASE (36)

Lagos, 31 March, 2014: On this week’s edition of Nigeria’s number one weekly show, MTV Base Official Naija Top Ten, popular comedian and actor, Bovi is the studio guest and – true to form - he gives everyone a good laugh during the chart countdown. Bovi on MTVBASE (27) The comedian, who co-hosts this week’s show with MTV Base VJ Ehiz, joins in the frenzy of this week’s number one video, “Surulere” by Dr Sid featuring Mavin boss, Don Jazzy.   With many celebrities posting “before” and “after” photos of themselves, using the “Surulere hashtag on social media, Bovi states that some Nigerian celebrities have avoided putting up any photos as they never experienced suffering while growing up, commenting, “Some of our celebrities like Davido have never seen or experienced suffering. He can’t even put up one “Surulere” picture because his past is brighter than some people’s future.” Bovi on MTVBASE (1) Bovi, who reveals this week chart with Ehiz, also throws a light but hilarious jab at Star Boy, Wizkid. He says, Wizkid is the only Nigerian boy who adds to his age while others keep reducing theirs. I believe he has never shaved before because he is just sixteen and if he is really older than that, I dare him to put up his birth certificate on Instagram to prove his real age!”

April-Fools-Day

April fool's day happens on April 1, and you know what that means! PRANK TIME! It's not certain when the tradition began, but one account dates it back to 1582, when France adopted the Gregorian calendar, thus moving New Year celebrations from the end of March to January, The Independent reported. It is said that those who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1 were considered "fools." However it began, the tradition continues to this day as families, classmates and even work colleagues make fools out of each other.

Here are some of the best pranks you can play on your co-workers that are unlikely to get you fired. 1.      Put a tape on a co-worker's reciever.

5 Love Languages

$

banner

When we think of love languages, our immediate thought may be of romantic relationship. However, we express love and affection in a variety of contexts and relationships.
As you work through the the list of the ''5 LOVE LANGUAGES'' listed below, think of a significant person with whom you are close: a boyfriend or girlfriend, a good friend, a parent, a colleague, etc.
words21
Physical Touch A person whose primary language is Physical Touch is, not surprisingly, very touchy. Hugs, pats on the back, and thoughtful touches on the arm—they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial, while neglect or abuse can be unforgivable and destructive. Appropriate and timely touches communicate warmth, safety, and love to you. touch Receiving Gifts Don’t mistake this love language for materialism; the receiver of gifts thrives on the love, thoughtfulness, and effort behind the gift. If you speak this language, the perfect gift or gesture shows that you are known, you are cared for, and you are prized above whatever was sacrificed to bring the gift to you. A missed birthday or a hasty, thoughtless gift would be disastrous—so would the absence of everyday gestures. Gifts are heartfelt symbols to you of someone else’s love and affection for you. words Words of Affirmation Actions don’t always speak louder than words. If this is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important—hearing the reasons behind that love sends your spirits skyward. Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten. You thrive on hearing kind and encouraging words that build you up. words1

Quality Time In Quality Time, nothing says “I love you” like full, undivided attention. Being there for this type of person is critical, but really being there—with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby—makes you feel truly special and loved. Distractions, postponed activities, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful. Whether itʼs spending uninterrupted time talking with someone else or doing activities together, you deepen your connection with others through sharing time.

words2 Acts of Service Can helping with homework really be an expression of love? Absolutely! Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most wants to hear: “Let me do that for you.” Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter. When others serve you out of love (and not obligation), you feel truly valued and loved.

How to Get Pretty in 10 Minutes or Less When your Running Late.

Time is a luxury that gets harder to afford by the day. What do you do if you have ran out of time to attend a special occasion and you only have very few minutes to getting there. Before you cue the familiar panic, know this: with a few key tips and tricks, you can still arrive looking fresh, polished, and chic. I think most females would need this tips, especially my girlfriend who spends most of her time in getting ready for an occasion. One of the steps you need to take when your getting late is to: Take 30sec to apply your concealer: Hide dark circles and blotchiness by applying concealer in a few key areas. Start by dabbing a brightening concealer  in the inner corners of your eyes, then apply it down the bridge of your nose and anywhere else where there’s redness. No need to blend just yet—you’ll do that in the next step. main.original1 Apply your bb Cream: Now is not the time for perfectly applied foundation. Instead, grab a BB cream or Smashbox’s and blend it into your skin using a beauty sponge or your fingers—the sheer formula will prevent any telltale streaks. Make sure to blend in your concealer as you apply! main Spend one minute to apply your mascara and make your browse sexy.: A dead giveaway that you rushed through your beauty routine? Unruly brows.  Take a minute to tame them by brushing through them with a clean spooly. Then, set them in place and add a touch of color with a tinted brow. main.original.4 Use another 2 minutes to brush your eyelashes: Skip the eyeliner and fake wide-awake eyes instantly by curling your lashes and adding a coat of lengthening mascara like Benefit’s They’re Real! . Hold a business card up behind your lashes to prevent mascara from getting on your eyelid. No Q-tip cleanup needed! main.original.5 Spend another 1 minute in applying your blush and tinting your lips: Dab a berry-colored gel blush, in Flush, into the apples of your cheeks with your fingers, then blend out with an angled blush brush. Pat the rest of the stain onto your lips for a subtle kiss of color. main.original.7 Burn It: Today will not be the day you showcase a head full of luscious, perfect curls—but that doesn’t mean your bedhead can’t be tamed. Gather your locks into a sleek sock bun, or spritz a texturizing spray, through your ends and pin them into an upside-down topknot. Messy chic at its best   Spritz +Smile: On your way out the door, spray your pulse points with an energizing fragrance. Then, take a deep breath and smile—arriving at your destination with grace is always the last (and most important) step.

Choosing The Best Fashion Accessories That Fits Your Attier

Accessories can make or break your look. When choosing fashion accessories to match your outfit, consider the color, scale and style of the pieces, and keep the occasion in mind. Color When you're wearing black, white or other neutrals, accessories in any color look stylish and coordinated. If you're wearing a colorful outfit, though, make sure your fashion accessories don't clash. It all goes back to the basics of the color wheel. Primary colors, of course, are red, blue and yellow. Secondary colors are those that result from mixing two primary colors (i.e., red plus yellow equals orange). Primary and secondary colors that are side by side on the wheel are analogous to each other. They work very well together when they are matched on the same level of lightness or darkness. If you want to make a big fashion statement, choose primary and secondary colors that are opposite of each other on the wheel. Pairing these colors is bold and adventurous, and some shades don't look as good together as others. Avoid partnering red with green, though, unless it's the holiday season. Experiment to find which colors work best for you. In general, don't use more than three colors in your whole ensemble. Scale: The scale of your fashion accessories is important, too. When you're wearing patterns, simple accessories are the best option. Accessories and jewelry that are too busy will make prints look tacky. The same goes for ruffled, sequined, embroidered or otherwise embellished garments: Wear understated accessories to keep the emphasis on your outfit. part-one The scale and shape of your handbag is also important. Consider your body type in addition to what you are wearing. Tall, thin women look best with short, slouchy bags such as hobos and clutches. Petite women should avoid oversized satchels; these bags overwhelm their small frames. Short ladies should also steer clear of handbags with long straps. Plus-size and hourglass-shaped women look fabulous with medium-sized structured or boxy handbags to balance out their curves. Style: Fashion accessories can define your style. A white shirt and jeans or simple black dress can look completely different depending on your choice of handbag, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. Here are some common accessories to consider, depending on your personal style: chloe
  • Classic accessories -- pearl- or diamond-stud earrings, silk scarf, leather clutch and classic black pumps
  • Glamorous accessories -- chandelier earrings, bib necklace, large cocktail ring, crystal-embellished clutch, oversized sunglasses and sky-high heels
  • Playful accessories -- chunky jewelry, hobo bag, headbands, skinny belt and colorful ballet flats
  • Edgy accessories -- thick cuff bracelet, choker necklace, studded handbag and black leather booties. DSC_3902
  • Workday accessories -- delicate necklace, classic watch, large satchel or shoulder bag and kitten heels
  • Casual accessories -- candy-colored bracelet or watch, Wayfarer sunglasses, cross body bag, floppy hats and knee-high boots or espadrille sandals. sun
Accessories can take any outfit from drab to fab. They can also help extend your wardrobe because you can achieve multiple looks from one basic dress just by changing your accessories. To look your best, put as much effort into selecting your fashion accessories as you do the main components of your ensemble.

Who Would Win The Fight, Football Vs poverty?

background3

A band of heroes unite to change the lives of those in need, to feed the starving and house the homeless. This is the rationale behind a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) initiative which it hopes will help halve world poverty by 2015. Arguably the UN faces an uphill struggle. A recent Oxfam report estimated that the world's richest 85 people share a combined wealth of $1.67 trillion, as much as the poorest 3.5 billion of the world's population. The World Bank's definition of poverty is based on an income of less than $2 a day, or a calorie intake of less than 2100 calories. Football stars Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane are the faces of the Match Against Poverty, launched in 2003 and now an annual event aimed at raising funds for the impoverished. Zinden "It's the world's most accessible and equal sport. You can even make your own football," Petra Lantz, director of the UNDP representation office in Geneva, told CNN. "I've seen that with kids who use paper and string, then they have a football and they pretend that they're Ronaldo or Zidane. "If you want to reach these kids who are no longer in school, sport is an excellent activity. Football is a sport that is accessible even for those who are poor." The match stems from the UN adopting the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, which were put in place to help the organization halve the number of people in the world living below the poverty line by 2015. The Match Against Poverty has played its part in that. The 2013 event raised $360,000 for youth-oriented projects in Brazil and Cape Verde, while Lantz suggests it has raised $4 million since its inception. This year the game took place in Bern, Switzerland, with the Stade de Suisse the venue for a match between Ronaldo, Zidane and friends and local club Young Boys. Stars like Luis Figo, Pavel Nedved and Marta –the world's most famous female player and a UN Goodwill Ambassador - turned out for a match which finished 8-6 to the stars. Organizers expect to raise $250,000 - generated from the sale of tickets and broadcasting rights and corporate sponsors - from the game, with two thirds of the money generated going to victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon - considered by some to be among the strongest such storms to make landfall - struck the Philippines on November 8. Its powerful winds and enormous storm surge smashed buildings, destroyed roads and caused widespread power and water outages. Proceeds from the match will go to the UNDP's short-term work scheme, which is focused on cleaning up after the storm and helping to put some money into people's pockets. However is assembling a collection of retired pros to play together the best way to raise interest in ending poverty? Lantz is convinced involving people of such a high profile is the only way to get the public excited about tackling inequality in the face of "poverty fatigue." "Having celebrities of this calibre standing up and saying 'We should join forces to reduce poverty, combat poverty and end poverty, it's really important," she said. "If you're a young kid in Lagos in Nigeria and you're playing football and you see one of your heroes standing up and saying 'it's about time the world ends poverty,' that's something that is very important." The match also sees the UNDP work alongside FIFA and UEFA, two bodies which govern world and European football respectively. According to Lantz, establishing partnerships between such large and influential organizations is vital. "We need partners, in the private sector and in civil society," she added.  "But working with bodies such as UEFA and FIFA, and the International Olympic Committee as well, it's a way of reaching others and engaging." A FIFA World Player of the Year winner and a two-time World Cup winner with Brazil, Ronaldo insited football can help address the issue of poverty. "We are very proud to help people and also we are happy because all of our friends said yes and they will come," Ronaldo told CNN. "Football has a lot of power in the world and our society."   Written By: By Tom McGowan

Health Tip: Keep Your Back Healthy

back-pain

Back pain is a very common complaint. According to the Mayo Clinic, USA, approximately 80% of all Americans will have low back pain at least once in their lives. Back pain is a common reason for absence from work, or visiting the doctor's. According to the NHS (National Health Service), UK, back pain is the largest cause of work-related absence in the United Kingdom. Although back pain may be painful and uncomfortable, it is not usually serious. Even though back pain can affect people of any age, it is significantly more common among adults aged between 35 and 55 years. Experts say that back pain is associated with the way our bones, muscles and ligaments in our backs work together. Symtopms Of Back Pains: A symptom is something the patient feels and reports, while a sign is something other people, such as the doctor detect. For example, pain may be a symptom while a rash may be a sign. The main symptom of back pain is, as the name suggests, an ache or pain anywhere on the back, and sometimes all the way down to the buttocks and legs. In most cases signs and symptoms clear up on their own within a short period. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help protect your back: story-top
  • Get plenty of regular exercise. Alternate cardiovascular exercises with those designed to strengthen the back and abdominals.
  • Avoid gaining extra weight, which adds stress to the lower back and spine.
  • Don't smoke, which can lead to premature aging of the spine.
  • Practice good posture; stand, sit and lift objects appropriately.

5 Rookie Running Mistakes You Should Avoid

RUNNING-SHOES-facebook

Starting out a running routine can be exciting until you realize that your enthusiasm has waned — sometimes just minutes into a hard run. Before you start dreading your jogging sessions, make sure you don't make these mistakes.
  1. Keep checking your watch: When you first start running, it can be easy to want to know how fast you're going and how long you have left. But keeping tabs on the ticking seconds can be discouraging, especially if you're already feeling exhausted by the first mile. Don't worry too much about how fast you're going — in fact, ignore that treadmill display or running watch for the most part, and only check on it periodically. check-your
  2. Ignore body signs: Feel a twinge in your lower back or a dehydration-induced headache? Now's not the time to power through. To prevent injuries that can sideline your new running habit, pay attention to how you're feeling — grab water if you're thirsty, and stop if you're feeling injured anywhere. Be sure that you're stretching afterward as well in order to prevent day-after soreness and flexibility issues.
  3. Push yourself too hard: All-out sprints are great for some short runs, but if you're a beginner, it's better to start off slow. Don't worry about if you need to slow down even more — just because you're taking walk breaks doesn't mean you're not a runner. Try it yourself: this 300-calorie walk-run workout is perfect if you're just starting out.
  4. Compare yourself: Everyone has a different pace, so don't feel bad if you aren't keeping up with that seasoned runner who just passed you. While it can be fun (and beneficial) to run alongside someone who challenges your time, when you first start, your focus should be on finishing those miles, not winning a race.Pick-Same-Route
  5. Pick the same route: You love that lakeside loop for its views and lack of inclines, but running it every time you head out isn't going to make you a better runner. Make sure you switch up your route to keep things interesting and challenge new muscles; you'll be more likely to stick to your running habit if you keep switching things up.

A Throw Back To Old School Dance And Culture: The Soul Train

soultrain.fw

The holidays of my youth were endless; filled with fun suffering experience. Play-fighting and foot races. Flying of kites and riding of bikes on the fields. Even when we had no light to illuminate our environment playing time continued even after supper and never stopped. We ran the street like swans of birds, climbing our neighbour’s fences and looking for the next compound to go explore. We terrorized our neighbour’s fruits and played cowboys and indian, on a hot sunny day we had our showers outside the house running naked with our innocence. 4pm was a special time on the clock, because that was when TV stations starts their transmissions, unlike now we have tv station running 24hrs. We sat down in front of our Tv screen waiting for the next cartoons to watch or kiddies program like famous 5, & the Cosby Kids. On Saturday was a special day, where after playing in the sun for hours you run back home for a drink of water. You pass by the television on your way to the kitchen. And your sisters are watching this: Soul Train Dancers If you're a certain age, Soul Train represents a cultural milestone. The show featured young black people dancing to popular predominantly black music, but underneath it was much more: Soul Train was a forum for African American post-civil rights movement dance, fashion, culture music and advertising. Host and creator Don Cornelius started the show in Chicago in 1970, airing it weekday afternoons on Channel 26 before taking the show to Los Angeles and greater fame the next year. The soul train reminds me of my childhood exploration days, the dance and the style of clothing which was extraordinarily tight fitted.  The show was sponsored by Johnson's product which was the first black-owned enterprise to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The partnership between the show and the black-owned, Chicago-based Johnson Products Company saw adverts like Afro Sheen hair and skin care products with commercials. Soul train featured performances by R&B, soul, and hip hop artists, although funk, jazz, disco, and gospel artists have also appeared. The series was created by Don Cornelius, who also served as its first host and executive producer. Each week when it’s aired on TV we looked out for several dance steps, hair style and fashion style that we can copy in other to impress our fellow friends. It’s actually funny looking at some of my old school picture, seeing the big shoes we wore and the tight slim trouser with wide bottoms. In those days we called it the Laboo trouser and if you were a kid you don't have one then you’re not the man. Sly Stone_Soul Train Photo Exhibition He sure feels like he is the man: Soul train no doubt affected the music and dancing culture of blacks, who used the medium as avenue of escapism and breaking of societal chains and shackles that were all-too-prevalent just decades before. releaseyourself old school gagnam style Well i begin to wonder how kids of today spend their holidays and what TV programs they looked forward to viewing and also reminisce about ....uhm Maybe Ben 10 i guess.

Kwasi Enin, a 17-year-old senior at William Floyd High School in Mastic, has been accepted into each of the eight elite Ivy colleges and universities. The acceptance rate for upcoming freshmen at these elite schools ranges from 5.9% at Harvard to 14% at Cornell.

“By applying to all eight, I figured it would better the chances of getting into one,” he said.

Enin has a few months left at William Floyd High School (pictured) before he enrolls at an Ivy League school.

Collectively, the Ivy League schools accepted less than 9% of all applicants for the class of 2018, ranging from 5.9% at Harvard to 14% at Cornell

“I’ve never seen anything like it in my 15 years as a high school counselor,” said Nancy Winkler, Enin’s guidance counselor. “He’s going to be a leader in whatever he chooses.”

Enin, the son of immigrant nurses from Ghana, wants to be a physician.

“I’m thinking of being a cardiologist or neurologist,” said Enin, who lives in Shirley. “A doctor is a community leader, a protector, someone who people turn to … when they need help.”

Simply amazing!!!
