Sydelle Willow Smith was born in 1987 in Johannesburg and after a few years of travelling she is now located in Cape Town. Smith attended the Market Photo Workshop and completed her foundation and intermediate courses in 2007. She then entered the University of Cape Town and graduated with an Honours degree in Social Anthropology
