Reason No. 342 we love Lupita Nyong’o: she’s not afraid to go bold with her makeup — like, cherry red lips with bright blue eye shadow bold. And for the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night, the new “ambassadress” for Lancôme showed off yet another noteworthy beauty look.
“It’s pretty out there,” makeup artist Nick Barose tells PEOPLE of the metallic eye effect he gave Nyong’o. “We went with something kind of ’70s disco-inspired, but wearable, not costume-y.”
Barose started with Lancôme Aquatique Waterproof Eyecolour Base, then applied Color Design Infinite 24H eye shadow in “Unlimited Silver” followed by Color Design eye shadow in “All That Glitter”. For extra intensity, he defined her eyes with black liquid liner, elongating her natural shape at the outer corners. He did two coats of mascara on her upper lashes and left the bottom ones bare.
“When you’re wearing a really colorful dress like Lupita’s Chanel one, silver is a good option,” says Barose.
For the lips, he chose L’Absolu Rouge in Saffron Silk, a salmon shade. “We didn’t want to compete with the eye. This color isn’t too bright, but it still pops.”
So what did Nyong’o think of the final look? “She loved it,” says Barose. “She looks good in every color. We always go for something fun that we haven’t done before.”
